Puerto Rico In The Wild

Find San Juan a bit tame? Is Vieques too “laid-back” for your vacation? Never fear; Puerto Rico has some first-rate adventures that offer an all-natural adrenaline rush. Start your engines and head to Arecibo’s Camuy Caves , a system of undergrounds caves and rivers. Several tour operators lead expeditions that kick the action up a notch with spelunking, rappelling, rafting, and hiking. For an entirely different wild side of Puerto Rico, arrange a trip out to the deserted island of Isla Mona (p. 246), where enormous iguanas and hordes of hermit crabs greet visitors. Puerto Rico’s rugged Ruta Panorámica is the gateway to many of the island’s isolated nature reserves, where you can have the call of the coquí and the mountain views all to yourself. The rough road may require some crafty driving skills, but the panoramic views, ample hiking, and numerous lakes make the trip worthwhile. For a shorter stint in Puerto Rico’s wilds, try the beautiful El Yunque forest , where you can summit a mountain in an afternoon
