One-Way Ticket To Paradise. There are several options for getting to the offshore islands of Vieques and Culebra. The fastest route is to fly directly from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, but this is also the most expensive (one-way $75). Slightly cheaper is to fly from Isla Grande airport, just outside Puerta de Tierra (one-way $45). Larger groups may find it convenient to take a taxi from San Juan to Fajardo ($65 for four people), then either fly to an island ($35-40) or take the ferry ($2-2.25). By far the most economical option is to take a público from Río Piedras to Fajardo ($3.50), then hop on the ferry. Allow at least 4hr. for the ride from Río Piedras to Fajardo. Ask the driver to take you all the way to la lancha (the dock).

Most of Puerto Rico’s internal flights connect Culebra, Fajardo, San Juan, and Vieques. All of the airlines flying to the Spanish Virgin Islands use tiny planes and charge similar rates. Note that flying into San Juan’s international airport is significantly more expensive than flying into San Juan Isla Grande Airport. Unless you’re in a big hurry, it’s much more economical to rent a car or take a público than it is to fly.
