Some travelers harbor romantic visions of biking around a Caribbean island, but that is much more feasible on less-developed islands. Heavy traffic and a mountain range running through the center of Puerto Rico make it difficult to ride anywhere, unless you’re interested in mountaing biking. While the best place to ride is on the southern half of the island where there are flat roads with less traffic, the only bike rental stores are in San Juan and on Vieques and Culebra. Many travelers try to get around Culebra and Vieques on bikes, but both islands have mountains (or at least large hills) in the middle. In Puerto Rico, it is advisable to use bikes as a form of recreation rather than a mode of transportation.
