Guesthouses are usually the most affordable type of accommodation in Puerto Rico, with a single room costing about $60-100, depending on the region. Generally owned by a private individual (as opposed to a company or chain), guesthouses range from ramshackle rooms rented out on the second floor of a residence to charming hotel-style accommodations complete with a reception area and complimentary breakfast. Most accommodations of this type do not have 24hr. reception, so it is best to have a reservation if you plan to arrive late. Guesthouse rooms almost always have private bathrooms with hot water, but the furniture may be old or mismatched and the room itself may be aged. Guesthouse rooms rarely have daily maid service; instead, rooms are cleaned after a guest leaves. The most important quality in a guesthouse is safety; even though locks are standard, you will still be trusting your life, and all your possessions, to the owner. Rooms are typically priced by the number of beds instead of the number of occupants, so a single person will pay the same as two people staying in one double bed and two people staying in separate beds will have to pay the price of a quad. Few guesthouses accept credit cards. Guesthouses are not always endorsed by the government, and thus they do not always charge the 9% accommodations tax.
