Not found in major cities, paradores (roughly translated as “country inns”) are small, independent hotels that are endorsed by the Puerto Rican Tourism Company (PRTC). A single room usually runs about $50-75 and the PRTC dictates that rates cannot change by season, making west coast paradores an excellent bargain during summer months (the high season on that part of the island). Paradores usually have 24hr. reception, daily maid service, an English-speaking staff, a restaurant, and corporate discounts; some offer tours, and most also have a pool. Located primarily in the central mountains and on the west coast, paradores are very popular vacation destinations for Puerto Ricans. The Puerto Rican Tourism Company web site (www.gotopuertorico.com) and ¡Qué Pasa! magazine both have a complete list of paradores.
