Puerto Rico Accommodations For Groups

Travelers staying for at least three days should consider consulting a realtor for information about vacation rentals. Most vacation rentals are either winter homes that the owners rent out during the rest of the year or permanent vacation homes that realtors rent out on a rotating basis. These units range from timeshare condos in San Juan to luxurious houses on Culebra and Vieques. Most vacation rentals are quite classy and come with bedding, linens, and a fully equipped kitchen. Some also have air conditioning, pools, cable TV, and hot tubs. Always make sure you know exactly what amenities are included before reserving a vacation home, as units vary greatly and it is usually impossible to see a unit before reserving. Prices range between $100-$500 per day for anywhere from 2-6 beds. Vacation rentals rarely have daily maid service, but usually offer unparalleled privacy and a remarkably good deal for larger groups. Let’s Go includes realtor information in San Juan, Luquillo, Vieques, Culebra, and Rincón. Many properties are also listed on the web. Cabins And Vacation Centers

When Puerto Ricans travel, they frequently take the whole extended family. Several no-frills accommodations cater directly to these large groups. The Puerto Rican Compañía de Parques Nacionales (CPN) sponsors centros vacacionales (vacation centers) at beaches in Añasco, Arroyo , Boquerón , and Humacao, and in the forest near Maricao . These vacation centers usually have two types of cabins. Cabañas are basic concrete structures with two bedrooms, bunk beds, a tiny kitchen area, no air conditioning, and no hot water. Villas have a similar structure, but are slightly more expensive and come with air conditioning and hot water. Almost all vacation center structures accommodate six people in a very small space. In addition to rooms, most complexes also contain a pool, basketball courts, and a large beach. These are a great bargain for groups of travelers who plan to spend most of their time outside and don’t mind cramped quarters. All villas and cabins come with a full kitchen, but do not include sheets, towels, or kitchen supplies. In 2005 the National Parks Company charged $65 per night for cabañas or $110 for villas plus 9% tax, with occasional promotional discounts. During low season on the west coast (Nov.-May), it is usually possible to show up and get a room, but during major holidays (Semana Santa and Christmas) and summer (May-Aug.) you must reserve well in advance either at the specific vacation center or at the San Juan office of the CPN, Apartado 9022089, San Juan-2089 (☎787-622-5200; fax 982-2107; www.parquesnacionalespr.com). Several private individuals have opened cabañas with a similar design; again, travelers must bring their own towels, linens, and kitchen equipment.
