A while back, my friend Natacha and I were looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of London. As we scrolled down the Ryanair flight offerings, the choice was obvious—why not visit the so-called "City of Smiles," Aarhus, Denmark? Neither of us knew anything about Denmark or its second largest city, so what better way was there to learn?

European film festivals have dominated the industry since 1932, when the premiere of Rouben Mamoulian's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde opened the first international event of its kind, Venice’s Esposizione d'Arte Cinematografica. Since then, film fests have cropped up in every major European city, churning out everything from low-budget student mumblecore flicks to sword-and-sandal epics to obscure shorts that rarely venture beyond the continent, save for a brief stint on Youtube. Films like director José Padilha’s recent Berlin Golden Bear winner, Tropa de Elite (The Elite Squad), and  Jia Zhangke’s 2006 Venice Biennale hit, Still Life (Sanxia haoren) challenge audiences and continue to push the medium’s limits. But if Cannes’s red carpet isn’t calling to you, fear not: the sheer amount of European film series each year guarantees something for everyone. So nab a cheap EasyJet ticket and hop to as many of these festivals as you can.

Scandinavian countries may lead the world in the areas of technology and social welfare, but their love for their royal families remains a beloved tradition amidst a sea of futuristic developments. Walk down the Strøget, Copenhagen’s central avenue, and notice whole postcard stands dedicated to the fairytale romance between the Crown Prince of Denmark and his Australian commoner bride. Visit the Stockholms slot (Stockholm Palace) in Sweden’s capital and enter a room filled with an interactive personals ad-style dedication to unmarried heiress apparent to the Swedish throne. So what’s all the fuss about? It seems that the royal families of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway do a more than a respectable job of all-out fairytale, salacious scandal, and completely cuckoo. Though most of the their duties are symbolic, the royals  remain in the forefront of the Scandinavian hearts and minds.

…and listen to music at the Student House. Aalborg first opened the Studenter Huset as a not-for-profit café, bar, and music venue. Since then, more of these institutions have sprung up in Denmark, including a particularly popular location in Arhus. All workers are volunteers, and profits go toward keeping the House running.
