Even though western Crete has struggled for years to maintain its identity amid surging tourism, Rethymno has met success where its neighbor Iraklion has failed. Each town in the area manages to maintain a sense of local authenticity and fill only short sections of the shore with tavernas, leaving long stretches to the birds, waves, and hikers. The melding of Ottoman, Venetian, and Greek architecture complements the blue waters of the southwestern coast and the rich, dark mountains and deep canyons of the interior.
