OTHER France DESTINATIONS

Paris Champs-Élysées (8ème)

Catering to the Louis Vuitton clientele, accommodations in the posh 8ème come with a lot of stars and a hell of a nightly rate. Budget travelers might want to look elsewhere. For those absolutely set on location, there are a few quality options.

  • Hôtel Alexandrine Opéra, 10 rue de Moscou (☎01 43 87 62 21; alexandrineopera@gmail.com), Nothing about this hotel could provoke anger (quite the contrary) but you'll still see red (decorators went a little crazy with the color scheme). Apart from that, rooms are well-sized, pleasant and come with a minibar (an unthinkable luxury at this price), hair dryer, TV, phone and shower. Singles €65-80, doubles €75-100. Breakfast €9. Takes credit cards.
  • Hôtel Europe-Liège, 8 rue de Moscou Though you could certainly get more bang for your buck elsewhere, this borderline modern hotel is one of the only affordable options in the pricey 8ème. Rooms are painted lilac, making guests feel slightly more cheerful despite the small size. Rooms come with TV, hair dryer, phone, and shower or bath. Singles €81, doubles €94-120. Wi-Fi €4.50 per hr. Breakfast €7. Takes credit cards. Has internet.
  • Foyer de Chaillot, 28 Ave. George V 01 53 67 87 27 (www.foyer-galliera.com), At its unbeatable address, the Foyer provides upscale dorm rooms and midbrow apartments that welcome female students or stagières. Well-equipped rooms with sinks and showers are outdone by the communal facilities: a full kitchen is available for breakfast and weekend meals, and the large common rooms are equipped with stereos and TVs. Toilets and additional showers in each hall. Does not take credit cards. Has internet.
  • Union Chrétienne de Jeunes Filles (UCJF/YWCA), 22 rue de Naples 01 53 04 37 47 (www.ucjf.net), A spacious and quiet shelter for girls that evokes memories of Madeleine re-runs. Simple rooms have hardwood floors, sinks, and desks, but emphasis is placed on building and sustaining a communal atmosphere. To that end, the large oak-paneled common room is more luscious with fireplace, TV, VCR, and books. Also has theater space and family-style dining room. Takes credit cards. Has internet.
  • Hotel Antin-St. Georges, 21 rue Notre Dame de Lorette 01 48 78 60 47 (www.hotelantinsaintgeorges.com), A cozy two-star located close to the Opera district in a lively Parisian neighborhood, this 36-room hotel promises a comfortable stay. There's a shower and bath in each of the very spacious rooms. The laundry facilities are a big plus, but other extra amenities are costly. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Has internet.
  • Woodstock Hostel, 48 rue Rodier 01 48 78 87 76 (www.woodstock.fr), You'd think the name would say it all, but not everything is chill here, bro—drugs are absolutely not allowed. A cozy reception instills an intimate vibe to the hostel, and a Beatles-decorated VW bug pays homage to the hippies of old. Rooms are basic but clean, and the outdoors terrace is lovely in the summertime. Does not take credit cards. Has internet.
