OTHER France DESTINATIONS

Paris Montparnasse

  • Hotel de Blois, 5 rue des Plantes, 14ème. (☎01 45 40 99 48; www.hoteldeblois.com), Conveniently located a 5min. walk from Denfert-Rochereau, and within walking distances of several tasty restaurants, Hotel de Blois is situated in a largely residential area of the 14ème on the popular rue des Plantes. Rooms are well-kept and relatively spacious, with full-sized bathrooms and showers. Amenities include hair dryer, phone, TV, and bathtubs. Don't fret about security—the exceptional hostess is extra vigilant about letting in strangers, given the hotel's central location. Her visitors show their gratitude in a proudly displayed collection of thank you notes. There are five floors and no elevator, so the hotel is far from wheelchair-accessible. Mouton Duvernet, Alésia. Breakfast €12, extra bed €3-5, Wi-Fi available. Reserve at least one month ahead. Singles €55-95; doubles €60-98; twin suite 65-80. Reception 7am-10:30pm. Check-in 3pm, check-out 11am. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Has internet.
  • Hotel du Parc, 6 rue Jolivet, 14ème (☎01 43 20 95 54; www.hoteldu-parc-paris.com), Located conveniently around the corner from Montparnasse, Hotel du Parc boasts bright red and somewhat small rooms with A/C, hair dryer, phone, and TV. Despite its central location, the setting is relatively tranquil; the sunny rooms overlook the small adjacent park, which doubles as a local pigeon's roost and outdoor bar. The staff is welcoming and eager to make your stay enjoyable. Montparnasse-Bienvenue. Breakfast €12. Wi-Fi included. Computers €2 per min., €5 per hr. Book at least a month ahead, especially in the summer time. Singles €70-180; doublse €80-200; triples €90-200. Takes credit cards. Has internet. Has air conditioning.
  • FIAP Jean-Monnet, 30 rue Cabanis 01 43 13 17 00 (www.fiap.asso.fr), This student-friendly hotel offers clean rooms and a vibrant social scene. The lobby is high-ceilinged and palatial, and the hotel offers a variety services; there's a bar, two restaurants, an outdoor terrace, and regular parties on Wednesdays and Fridays. Perhaps a lingering remnant of summers past, the hallways have a funky, musty scent, and boast beautiful abstract artwork in an effort to distract from the sweaty musk. Rooms have single beds with a bath/shower and phones. Jean-Monnet boasts fantastic group rates—incredibly, doubles actually cost less than single rooms here, and the price for extra beds decreases in direct proportion to the number you request. Summer travelers beware, though: this place doesn't have air-conditioning. Takes credit cards. Has internet. Has outdoor seating.
  • Hotel du Midi, 4 avenue Ren 01 43 27 23 25 (www.midi-hotel-paris.com), Comfortable if unmemorable, Hotel du Midi has clean, air-conditioned rooms equipped with the works (TV, phone, hair dryer, shower, etc.). If you can stand the noise from the bar next door and trains across the street, the hotel is conveniently located across the street from the Denfert Rochereau metro stop, which provides speedy access to both Paris's central attractions and outer suburbs. Singles €88-108; doubles 98€-148€; suites €168. Takes credit cards. Has internet. Has air conditioning.
  • Pacific Hôtel, 11 rue Fondary 01 45 75 20 49 (www.pacifichotelparis.com), Located in a quiet residential area in the 15ème within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower, this family-owned and run hotel offers small rooms fully equipped with full baths, desks, hair dryers, TVs, and so on. Reserve at least a few weeks ahead, as this hotel fills up most nights, especially in the summer and high tourist season. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Has internet.
  • Three Ducks Hostel, 6 Place Etienne Pernet 01 48 42 04 05 (www.3ducks.fr), It's always happy hour at the Three Ducks Hostel. No, really: the concierge desk doubles as a bar (beer €2.20-7). A laid-back vibe prevails here, and the rooms and the general decor embody what the attendant describes as a “grunge” attitude. If this is your scene, then the Ducks are for you. Rooms are available in twin, quad, or 6-12 bed formats. Computers and valuables can be stored in a safe at the front desk/bar, and there's a kitchen for guest use. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Has internet.
  • Aloha Hostel, 1 rue Borromée 01 42 73 03 03 (www.aloha.fr), The Aloha Hostel boasts a diverse international crowd, countless recommendations, clean rooms and showers, and a couple of incredibly smelly bathrooms. If you can stand to bear that last item, you should enjoy your stay here. Located conveniently near the Eiffel Tower on a quiet street near the Place General Beuret, this hotel is walking distance from a vibrant neighborhood of bars and eateries. Does not take credit cards. No wheelchair access. Has internet.

  • Hôtel Camélia, 24 bd. Pasteur 01 47 83 76 35 (www.hotel-cameliaparis15.com), Hôtel Camélia is conveniently located a block from the metro, and close to a plentiful collection of eateries and shops, but don't stay here if you're looking for a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of Paris. Rooms are comfortable and clean, furnished with a claustrophobic shower and toilet combo, and bizarrely heavy and hard-to-open doors (arthritic readers beware). The hotel boasts free Wi-Fi, but the owner is planning to change during upcoming renovations to cable-based internet, since Wi-Fi is allegedly bad for customers' health. Takes credit cards. Has internet.
