If you're going to stay this far out from the center of town, there better be something good keeping you here. The 17ème hosts a number of more luxurious budget accommodations that will give you a soft bed to come home to after a long day of sight-seeing, but it'll be a long metro ride.

- Hôtel Prince Albert Wagram, 28, passage Cardinet (hotelprincealbert.com), Located in a quiet alleyway, Hôtel Prince Albert Wagram offers reasonably sized, clean rooms in a quiet neighborhood. Rich dark colors and black leather couches in the lobby make for a more”manly” feel than in other small hotels. Guests are sometimes allowed to use the kitchen microwave. If you are American and of color, the proprietor might ask you if “Obama is your family” (he asked this Research Writer, anyway). Prices negotiable. Malesherbes. Walk up bld. Malesherbes. - Hotel Riviera, 55 Rue des Acacias 01 43 80 45 31 (www.hotelriviera-paris.com), An unimpressive hallway opens into princely rooms, or as princely as you'll get on a budget anyway. Rooms include big beds, TVs, thick carpets, and douches (yes, people on the Continent actually appear to use them); some have large baths. Takes credit cards.
