Paris:

OTHER France DESTINATIONS

Paris Montmartre (18ème)

  • Refuge des Fondus, 17 rue des 3 Frères 01 42 55 22 65 The best thing about Refuge des Fondus is its originality. A self-proclaimed refuge from one of the most touristy areas in Paris, this restaurant serves its customers one of two selections—meat or cheese fondue—and wine in baby bottles at two long communal tables. The quality of the wine isn't great—perhaps because it's served in a baby bottle. Happy customers have scribbled their gratitude all over the restaurant's chalkboard walls. The help is convivial, as are (hopefully) your tablemates. You'll either leave shaking your head in amazement or, if you're more traditionally inclined, in disgust. But, in any case, you'll leave shaking your head, and that's saying something for a restaurant in the heart of a tourist machine. Does not take credit cards. Serves alcohol.
  • Bodega, 54 rue Ordener This fantastic small restaurant and bar is the Ritz of budget eating. The owner and bartender is very friendly, and frequently chats with his customers; if you're seated by the large open window, don't be surprised if he co-opts your party to help him pass plates of food to his customers outside on the terrace. The prices are rock-bottom, the portions are large, and the ingredients are fresh. Everything is served with a smile. Does not take credit cards. Serves alcohol. Has outdoor seating.
  • Le Carajas, 24 rue des 3 Frères 01 42 64 11 26 (www.carajas.free.fr), There's something wrong about taking your wine in a baby bottle, but Le Carajas makes it feel right. A cozy, convenient location on rue des Trois Frères, Le Carajas serves up tasty traditional Brazilian dishes at somewhat steep prices. The service is warm and friendly; one cook and one waitress manage the small dining room. At non-peak hours, you might even snag a free entree if you chat them up a bit. The hours are flexible, but count on getting food at lunch and dinner hours. Takes credit cards.
  • Djerba Cacher Chez Guichi, 76 rue Myrha 01 42 23 77 99 Located in one of Paris's grittier neighborhoods, Djerba Cacher offers tasty Algerian food at very reasonable prices. Let's just say that tourists stick out around here. For the heartiest of the bunch, a visit to Djerba will give you a taste of the “real Paris,” which doesn't welcome too many tourists. During the day, however, there's little danger of incident. The meat is freshly skewered and succulent, the condiments are tasty, and the service is friendly. There's no better time to go in than during an Algerian soccer match, so long as you don't mind that the service stops during exciting parts of the game. Does not take credit cards.
