Paris:

OTHER France DESTINATIONS

Paris Buttes Chaumont (19ème)

  • L'Atlantide, 7 avenue Laumière (☎01 42 45 09 81; www.latlantide.fr), A relatively hard-to-find type of restaurant in Paris, L'Atlantide practices true North African gastronomie, using meats and spices coming directly from the mountains of North Africa. If you can stand a lot of Oriental-rug patterning (rugs, tablecloths, and waiters' aprons are all coordinated), you'll get a nice hearty plate of couscous you won't forget. Entrees €5.50-10. Couscous €11-19.50. Plats €13-19.50. Vins €12.50-22.50. Open Daily 7-10:30pm, Sa-Su 12-2:30pm. Takes credit cards. Serves alcohol.
  • La Kaskad' Cafe, 2 pl. Armand-Carrel (☎01 40 40 08 10), Just outside the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, La Kaskad' nets its fair share of unsuspecting—and suspecting—visitors. Their spacious, wrap-around terrace is a perfect place to relax after a stroll in the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. Varied, American-friendly cuisine includes palatial sundaes (€7.50-9). You know what you're getting into, but you'll be properly fed and ready to get into the Buttes. Entrees €4.90-12.90. Plats €12.90-18.90. Lunch formule €14.90. Open daily 7:30am-2am. Takes credit cards.
  • Lao Siam, 48 rue de Belleville 01 40 40 09 68 While most of the dishes here are cheap, Lao Siam sneaks a few more euro from your wallet by charging separately for rice (€2.20). The decor is nothing fancy. Paper napkins leave no room for pretension; old-fashioned miniature figures mix awkwardly alongside their younger anime-influenced compatriots. But the food speaks louder than the decor, and the place is generally packed. The filet du poisson with “hip-hop” sauce (€8.80) is not to be missed. Lots of very tasty and salty duck selections. Takes credit cards. Serves alcohol.
  • La Boulangerie par Véronique Maucler, 83 rue de Crimée 01 42 40 64 55 Baking its divine bread in one of only four remaining wood-fired ovens in France, Maucler uses only organic ingredients in her creations. This cozy neighborhood boulangerie doesn't stick to the often-narrow boulangerie formula; it serves a pretty cheap Sunday brunch. For €11, those who enjoy the continental breakfast side of brunch can sample the numerous homemade breads, pastries, and jam, washed down by fresh OJ and coffee or hot chocolate. No right-minded person can walk by this place and turn down one of the shrewdly placed mini-cakes and patisseries. Takes credit cards.
  • Pizza and Pasta, 36 av. Jean Jaurès This restaurant may be too small to have a listed phone number, but don't be fooled by appearances; despite this hole in the wall's comically unassuming moniker, you won't find a better deal on quality homemade Sicilian or Italian food in Paris. The interior looks more like a convent cafeteria than a restaurant, but plenty of regular customers enjoy the restaurant's cozy terrace on av. Jean Jaurès. The food is truly splendid; fresh Sicilian selections make you feel like a house guest in Sicily. Takes credit cards. Serves alcohol.
