The mall began as a small food market in 1135; Philippe Auguste and, later, Louis-Philippe and François I all considered Les Halles a sort of pet project, and its expansion soon surpassed their expectations. The forum and gardens above ground attract a large crowd. Descend into the pits of one of Paris's storied historical sites to discover its bastard American child; a 200 boutique shopping mall (plus three move theaters), with selections ranging from the Gap, to H and M, to Franck Provost. Le Grain de Sable, 79 rue St.Louis-en-l'Île (☎01 46 33 67 27; www.legraindesable.fr), Absolutely exquisite hats (€155) and head pieces (€45) that any 20-something-year-old probably can't pull off and certainly can't afford. The beautiful works are handmade, often at a wood table in the boutique. If you do spring for one, you'll attract admiring double-takes all day. Hats €30-155. Open M and W-Su 11am-7pm, Tu 3-7pm.
