Paris:

OTHER France DESTINATIONS

Paris Cinema

  • L'Arlequin, 76 rue de Rennes (☎01 45 44 28 80), A proud revival theater, L'Arlequin goes heavy on the Hitchcock, mixing in other classic European films and some more modern French selections. The same three films are featured each week, undoubtedly decreasing the prevalence of adolescent movie-hopping. Some films are in English, but beware of certain dubbed selections. Full price €9.50, reduced price €6.50 for 60+ students, 18-under, and big families. No discount applies F night-Su night except to 18-under. Takes credit cards.
  • Cinémathèque Française, 51 rue de Bercy (☎01 71 19 32 00; www.cinematheque.fr), Though it's had some problems settling down (it's moved over five times, most recently in 2005), the Cinémathèque Française is committed to sustaining film culture. A must for film buffs, the theater screens four-to-five classics, near-classics, or soon-to-be classics per day; foreign selections are usually Voice Over. The Française also features multiple movie-related exhibits, which include over 1000 costumes, objects, and apparatuses from the past and present world of film. Buy tickets 20min. early. €6.50, under 26 and seniors €5, under 18 €3. Temporary and permanent collections open M and W-Sa noon-7pm, Su 10am-8pm. Ticket window open from noon-last showing M and W-Sa, from 10am-last showing on Su. Takes credit cards.
  • Action Christine, 4 rue Christine 01 43 33 86 86 (www.actioncinemas.org), This small theater plays mostly American flicks from the 1930s-1960s for the tourist circus at Saint-Michel, but some more modern productions occasionally sneak into the program. Christine also hosts lectures and discussions with local film scholars; check out the website or visit the theater itself for listings. This is a nice way to escape the heat of the day or wind down after a long day from Saint Michel; despite its proximity to the tourist factory, you would think Action Christine was in a small village in the northeastern part of France. Does not take credit cards.
  • Les Trois Luxembourg, 67 rue Monsieur-le-Prince 08 92 68 93 25 The first multiplex in Paris and the first art house theatre in the Latin Quarter, Les 3 Luxembourg is an old cinema devoted to contemporary film culture. They pay special attention to “auteur” cinema, including documentaries. Independent, classic, American, and foreign films are shown with French subtitles. Does not take credit cards.
