Point Ephémère, 200 quai de Valmy (☎01 40 34 02 48; www.pointephemere.org), A continuously changing, grungy bar/restaurant/concert hall/dance studio/artist residence, where non-conformity and cigarettes reign supreme. Music acts are usually lesser known. On a concert night, the 300-seat space is packed with guys who collect tattoos, and girls who tote helmets instead of purses. Don't walk back late alone. Le Bataclan, 50 bd. Voltaire 01 43 14 00 30 (www.le-bataclan.com), In French slang, bataclan means stuff or junk. In French music culture, Bataclan means a 1500-person concert space and cafe-bar that used to be a Chinese pagoda and now hosts the likes of Metallica, Oasis, Blur, Prince, MGMT, and indie rock bands. La Cigale, 120 bd. Rochechouart 01 49 25 89 99 (www.lacigale.fr), La Cigale is a historic stop for most contemporary music (rock, indie, hip-hop, soul, etc.) tours. Inaugurated in 1887 and classified as a historical monument in 1981, the theater's past artists have included French mega-mogul Johnny Halladay, Radiohead, Cypress Hill, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Capacity is a little under 1400, so buy tickets online if you want a spot. Takes credit cards.
