Paris Passy And Auteuil (16ème)
The 16ème isn't the hottest spot in town, but it does feature a few stylish bars with reasonably priced drinks. You'll be hanging out with the chic and the too-cool-for-school, so leave those frayed sneakers at home.
- Sir Winston, 5 rue de Presbourg (☎01 40 67 17 37), This cafe/salon/bar/club is a sophisticated hotspot of the young Parisian Bobos (that's bohemian borgeoisie, for those not in the know). Lean back into a leather chair and sip on a glass of wine (€5) or smoke attractively alongside a pensive Buddha. Afterall, Buddha would have totally done the same. There's a dance space downstairs, though the music is mainly jazz and lounge tunes. Kleber. French fries €5, Caeser salad €5. Open daily from 9am-4a Takes credit cards. Serves alcohol.
- The Honest Lawyer, 176 rue de la Pompe (☎01 45 05 14 23; www.honest-lawyer.com), An unpretentious place to liquor up in the 16eme is about as hard to find as an honest lawyer, but The Honest Lawyer is just that. The wood paneling, brass lamps, and free Wi-Fi are reminiscent of a law library; the 80s pop, large-screen TVs, and the large painting of a judge nursing a tankard of beer, not so much. A regular and largely male crowd of dissheveled grad student types schlep their laptops and briefcases here for a relaxed and reasonably priced drink. Our intrepid research-writers report that the stella here is”bomb-ass” (€3.50). Victor Hugo.Martini €4, beer €3-5, cocktail €8. Hours, including tour times and other time-related hard info. Takes credit cards. Serves alcohol.
- La Gare, 19 Chausee de la Muette 01 42 15 15 31 (www.restaurantlagare.com), Once a train station, La Gare is now a trendy bar and the favored hang-out spot of the wealthy young things who live in surrounding apartments. The drinks aren't always as strong as they could be, but there is a wide selection of elaborate cocktails (€10); the ginger mojito and French fizz (absinthe, ginger, vanilla, syrup, and lemonade) are particularly mouth-watering. The terrace is a nice place to sit, and the inner lounge is warmed by a raging fire, though you'll probably want to move on before the night ends. Takes credit cards. Has internet. Serves alcohol.
- Frog XVI, 110bis ave. Kleber 01 47 27 88 88 (www.frogpubs.com), Frog XVI is what happens when Englishmen move to Paris. All beers are home-brewed and fairly cheap (2.3L jugs €24). Neon lights, leather stools, hopping music, and an uncommonly attractive clientele make for a classy place to get drunk. Might be one of the few places in Paris where quesadillas, nachos (€7) and chicken wings are served up with a shot of tequila (€4). Takes credit cards. Serves alcohol.
- Duplex, 2bis av. Foch 01 45 00 45 00 (www.leduplex.com), One of the few “hot” nightlife options in the 16th, Duplex shines as a legitimate club. Each of the three dance floors plays different music, ranging from R and B to house. Theme nights cater to every kind of partier. Takes credit cards. Serves alcohol.
