Menorca’s fantastic beaches, rustic landscapes, and picturesque towns draw sun-worshippers, photographers, and ecologists alike. When UNESCO declared the island a biosphere reserve in 1993, the government took important strides to emphasize preservation of Menorca’s natural harbors, pristine beaches, rocky northern coast, and network of farmlands. Menorca’s main cities, Mahón and Ciutadella, located at the east and west ends of the island respectively, serve as gateways to the real attraction: crystal-clear aquamarine water that laps stretches of velvety sand and hidden rocky coves (see Beaches).
