Boat transportation is only necessary to enter and exit Parque Nacional Tortuguero . However, it is a fairly common mode of transportation along the Caribbean Lowlands. Ranging from panchas or water taxis to larger ferries, boats are just as reliable as buses. However, boats are almost always open to the elements, with little shelter from bad weather. Public boat transport is available daily out of Limón, but it might be easier to stick to prearranged packages set up by your hotel or by tour operators.
