Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum |
Rum is the drink of choice in Puerto Rico. The following beverages may tempt you to try a little of the local spirit when you travel to Puerto Rico:
Piña Colada. Supposedly invented on the island, it requires 1½ oz. white rum, 1 oz. coconut cream, 2 oz. pineapple juice, and ice. Blend well, then throw on a pineapple or cherry for garnish.
Coquito. Named after the Puerto Rico’s tiny frogs, this Christmas concoction makes an excellent drink year-round. For a full batch, mix 28 oz. coconut milk, 14 oz. condensed milk, 2 egg yolks, 2 cups of Bacardi rum, and blend well.
Puerto Rican Sunrise. This Puerto Rican version of the popular tequila sunrise is refreshingly easy to make. Mix equal parts of white rum with orange juice and grenadine, then stir. For a tropical twist, replace the orange juice with passion fruit juice.
Cuba Libre. The name may be Cuban, but this common drink is popular with both locals and travelers to Puerto Rico. Plus, it’s one of the easiest mixed drinks to make—just mix rum and Coke, and add a lime. The quantities are up to your discretion.
Caribbean Seas. Hurricane season in Puerto Rico may bring dark and stormy waters, but this delicious drink is nothing but clear, blue waters. Start with 2 oz. rum and 3 oz. of Blue Caracao, 1 oz. sour mix, and a splash of Sprite and orange juice.
