The Catholic Murals |
The murals of West Belfast are a powerful testament to the volatile past and fierce loyalties of the divided neighborhoods. Many of the most famous Catholic murals are on Falls Rd., an area that saw some of the worst of the Troubles.
1. Mural illustrating protestors during the Hunger Strikes of 1981, in which Catholics fasted for the right to be considered political prisoners.
2. Portrayal of Bobby Sands, the first hunger striker to die, is located on the side of the Sinn Féin Office, Sevastopol St. Sands was elected as a member of the British Parliament under a “political prisoner” ticket during this time and is remembered as the North’s most famous martyr.
3. The Clonard Martyrs Memorial Garden on Bombay St. commemorates the attack there—Bombay St. was the first to be bombed during The Troubles—and lists the names of the dead.
