Rolling Stones Of Isla Del Caño |
Most visitors to Isla del Caño Island come to see the coral reef and tropical fish. And though these fish are often strange creatures, the most perplexing features of Isla del Caño are the mysterious Diquis stones located at the center of the landmass.
The stone spheres on Isla del Caño are believed to have originated in the Diquis Valley on the Costa Rican mainland around the same time as similar stones in Palmar Sur. It is not known who made them or when, but they are believed to be over 300 years old. Made in a time without advanced tools or modes of transportation, the stones (ranging in diameter of a few centimeters to over two meters and weighing up to 16 tons) are almost perfectly round. The Diquis stones are even more impressive when one thinks about how far they must have traveled to reach their destination.
Though the specific purpose of the stones is not known, it is believed that they may have had religious significance or were used to mark the passage of time with the stars. Those with wilder imaginations have suggested that they were created by aliens or supernatural powers. Aliens or not, It’s worth the hike to the center of the island to see them and come up with one’s own theory.
