There are numerous pilgrimage sights in Chiang Mai dedicated to the city’s founder, King Mengrai of the Lanna kingdom.

1. Three Kings monument: Mengrai consulted King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao about the site of his new city.

2. Wat Inthakin: The Temple of the City Navel is on the site of the former Sao Inthakin, or Lord Indra’s pillar, which guards the city and brings fertility to its soil.

3. King Mengrai’s Shrine: This small but ornate shrine was erected here in 1975 because the original shrine was located too far away for people to pay homage to the city’s founder.

4. City Pillar: Moved here after the Burmese occupation of Chiang Mai, this teak pillar is underground in a small shrine opened only during the annual City Pillar Ceremony in May.
