Between the mix of French and Arabic, it can be sometimes confusing to decipher a menu in Morocco. Here are the basic foods that you can order without your stomach punishing you.

Tajin: This dish is a meat combo with cooked dates and vegetables. Its slow roasted over coals in a pointed ceramic dish. You may be confused what a pointed dish looks like, until you see one. Trust us, you’ll know. Local meats such as beef and lamb go well with the dish, but be careful since its served hot enough to melt flesh.
Pastilla: This is pronounced “bastiyya” and its an elaborate meat pie. Its usually made with, um... how do we put this gently? ¦baby pigeons, but its also made more commonly with chicken. The top of the pie is covered in powdered sugar and cinnamon, making it a strange, but oddly tasty meal.
Couscous: For the vegetarians, this is a safe option that lacks weird meat, unless you order it with sausage. Its made with spherical granules made by rolling semolina wheat. A Couscous Royale is one with everything plus the kitchen sink.
Börek: Not like the Kazak movie star, this is a filled pastry. The flaky crust will get everywehre and so will its filling of either cheese, meats, or veggies.
