World's Biggest Caves in Vietnam |
Travel addicts and outdoorsy types around the world are abuzz over an article in the latest edition of National Geographic magazine. The piece documents the recent discovery of the world's largest cave in Vietnam's Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The national park contains one of the most unique and impressive cave and grotto systems on the planet and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The newly-discovered cave, named Son Doong, is massive, measuring 460 feet wide at some points and more than 2.8 miles deep. Scientists were led to the stunning structure by a local farmer who discovered its entrance several years earlier. (We're guessing he was planning to become a crime-fighting, cape-wearing vigilante and make this his headquarters.) National Geographic's complete profile can be found in its January 2011 edition of the magazine.
