A Night at the Michigan Theatre |

Ann Arbor is host to many fun and quirky institutions, and one of my favorites has always been the Michigan Theatre. Sure, it may just be a movie theatre, but it's also one of the city's oldest landmarks. Built in 1928, the Michigan is a remarkably preserved example of the era's architecture. From the rich carpets and wood paneling to ornate chandeliers and wall designs to an authentic theatre pipe organ in the main auditorium, the Michigan is certainly a sight to see.
Even better is the theatre's selection of films. From acclaimed blockbusters like Black Swan to independent gems like The Artist to older movies brought back to the big screen, the Michigan's films never disappoint. In the summer, those tired of the outdoor films of the Summer Festival's Top of the Park can head over to the Michigan on Sundays and Tuesdays for classics like Goldfinger, Psycho, West Side Story, and my personal favorite, a sing-along of The Sound of Music.
I decided to see The Artist there last week, and it was truly an experience to see a silent film in a theatre still decorated in the style of the era of silent film. With the best theatre popcorn I've ever tasted and one of the best pictures of the year, it was a delicious and entertaining glimpse into the old world of film.
