NEW ZEALAND
Overview
As Hollywood has so vividly reminded us with every recent fantasy epic, New Zealand offers some of the most spectacular natural landscapes on Earth. Known in the native Maori language as Aotearoa, or "the land of the long white cloud," this Pacific nation is covered by soaring mountains, lush forests, sandy beaches, and ancient fjords and glaciers. This spectacular scenery is at the center of Kiwi national pride and New Zealanders have worked hard to protect their natural heritage. This island nation boasts an impressive network of trails, national parks, and nature reserves that include the Tongariro Crossing, acclaimed as one of the most spectacular hikes in the world. Visitors to this rugged landscape are always greeted with exuberant Kiwi hospitality, which often results in numerous invitations to heli-ski, bungee jump, or white-water raft. After all, New Zealand is known as the "Adventure Capital of the World" and such breathtaking views deserved to be seen from every imaginable—or unimaginable—angle. But after days spent plummeting towards their own beautiful ground, New Zealanders also know the perfect way to unwind: turn the rugby game on mute, open a bottle of local, world-class Chardonnay, snuggle into a cozy wool sweater from the bountiful sheep herd, and wonder how you came to be in the greatest place on the planet.
