DOMINICA
Overview
There are few places on Earth where every view is spectacular. Fortunately for us, Dominica is one of those places. Known as "the Nature Island of the Caribbean," the landscape of jagged and lush mountain peaks rising high above clear, blue seas serves as testament to the millennia of volcanic activity that created today’s Dominica. Unlike other Caribbean isles, Dominica is not famous for its beaches, as they are few and often difficult to get to. Travelers instead find themselves eager to explore this tiny island’s natural environment, visiting locales such as the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a forested and volcanic UNESCO World Heritage Site, or Champagne, a southern-coast snorkeling hotspot where underwater vents transform the ocean into a veritable glass of bubbly. While these natural sites are easily accessible by the network of mountainous, ocean-view highways that traverse the country (warning: locals careen down these roads, making it an adventure whenever you drive), hiking the territory is another popular option. The capital of Roseau, though small, provides many good restaurants and amenities while a friendly local population makes visitors feel more than welcome. Although getting to Dominica requires a little island-hopping, as there are no direct flights here from the mainland, it is a naturalist’s paradise definitely worth the trip.
