Tucked away in central Mexico is a city sure to steal your heart, and luckily not much of your wallet. Guanajuato City, with its brightly colored buildings and bustling mariachi bands, maintains the romance and liveliness of a European city, without sacrificing its wonderful Latin American setting. Hostels are as cheap as 100 pesos per night, or less than $10 USD, and the views of the city from any given rooftop are incredible. And while you may spend your days aimlessly winding through the city's cobblestone streets, visiting the house of famed Mexican painter Diego Rivera or brushing shoulders with a street musician belting out Bob Dylan songs, no trip is complete without finding time for these distinct Guanajuato treasures.

Dancing the night away at Guanajuato Grill
Even after your treacherous bus ride through the rising hills of Guanajuato, hit the ground running with a night on the town at Guanajuato Grill. A popular club among locals and visitors, the grill boasts a large and well-lit dance floor, with plenty of space for you to break out your favorite moves. Or if slow is your style, chill out at one of the club's swanky tables with a few well-priced drinks (around $3-$6 USD) and your newest friends.
Visiting the dead, las momias of Guanajuato
Now of course this isn't Egypt, but who said mummies couldn't exist in Mexico too? Las momias of Guanajuato are internationally famous, as the museum boasts the world's smallest mummy. But unlike the famous mummified King Tut, you won't find important Mexican figures enshrined behind the glass; instead these mummies are everyday people who died as recently as the mid-1800s. Forget those toilet paper-like wrappings, these mummies are all skin and bones still! Get ready for an eerie walk into the past.

Taking in a breathtaking rooftop view
There is no way to ignore the enchanting views Guanajuato City offers or the thousands of rooftop vantage points to take them in from. Finding a rooftop, grabbing your travel companions and then of course a camera is an absolute necessity in this rainbow-painted hillside city. And at night, you can find out where the hottest party is simply from listening to the resounding shouts throughout the hills. Make sure to stay at a hostel with rooftop access, like Hostal Arlequin, or you will certainly miss one out on one of the city's best assets.
