BADEN

Overview

Located just an hour outside the Vienna city center, Baden bei Wien is known as “the place with the spas and a really big casino.” And to be honest, that’s about all that’s there. Unless you crave the healing powers of a thermal pool (generally popular with the population over 50) or are a small child craving pool parties (popular with those ages 10 and under), there aren’t many people in-between. Aside from swimming and gambling, walking around the Biedermeier and neo-classical style buildings is much like walking around a smaller, quainter version of Vienna. Miniature versions of the same things—a Rathaus, Plague Monument, Stadttheater, and St. Peter’s Church—constitute the prominent buildings of a city that at one point was the Empire’s resort destination. Baden is also known for a few famous residents; Beethoven composed his Ninth Symphony at Rathausgasse 10, and poets Grillparzer and Raimund Nestroy were frequent visitors.
