LAXENBURG

Overview

Hop off the plane at LAX...kidding. You can get here via a Metro-bus
transfer. The quiet town of Laxenburg sits 17km southwest of Vienna, and to be honest, is
really only worth visiting on a sunny day when you can enjoy the grounds of the one and
only sight in town—Schloβ Laxenburg. Somewhat reminiscent of Schloβ Schonbrunn in the
city, Laxenburg is a pale yellow palace with sweeping grounds, and was formerly a spring
and summer home of the imperial family. Today, the Schloβ has been converted into the
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, so unfortunately, there are more
computers than horse-drawn carriages on the premises. Visiting the Schloβ isn’t an option,
but you can explore the grounds (see Sights ), which were actually Empress Sisi’s favorite
escape from the city and where she often enjoyed lengthy horseback rides. Laxenburg was
also Empress Sisi’s honeymoon destination, but the town never really figured out how to
market that, so the destination has remained relatively untouched by tourists.
