BELGIUM

Overview

Belgium may not rank near the top of most people’s lists of must-see European vacation spots. Next to the Netherlands or Greece, Belgium doesn’t scream party central, and it doesn’t have famous sights like you can find in Italy and France. But many people spend a whole Eurotrip searching for, and failing to find, the kind of small-town charm that is this entire country’s specialty. Shift your vacation into a different gear and indulge in Belgium’s own version of whimsy. Plus, Belgian cuisine revolves around fries, waffles, chocolate, and beer. It’s basically the best Sunday brunch you’ve ever had, and it never ends.

If you have a penchant for public urination, you’ll probably enjoy yourself in Brussels. Peeing statues aplenty await you; it’s hard to turn the corner without seeing something taking a leak. It’s cute when you’re made out of bronze, but Let’s Go doesn’t recommend trying it yourself—indecent exposure charges don’t make good souvenirs. While you’re avoiding criminal charges, you might want to swing by the European Quarter, where you’ll find more ambassadors and Eurocrats than you can shake a roll of red tape at. Brussels is also home to dozens of museums, art galleries, and theaters for the cultural traveler in you. And don’t forget Bruges, one of Europe’s most charmingly preserved medieval cities. It’s not just small-town charm you’ll find in Belgium; this is the place for small-country charm.
