First of all, you must go to Prague. No European journey is complete without a trip to Prague. Ask anyone who has been there: Prague is not optional.
Let's talk specifics. You are in Prague. There are endless ways to enjoy this city, and I’m not going to even try to be comprehensive. On my most recent trip to Prague, I spent a lot of time climbing things. I have to confess, it’s one of my favorite ways to experience a place. I can think of few better ways to really feel where you are.
The Prague Castle
No one needs to tell you to visit the castle, but make sure your ticket includes the “Great South Tower of St Vitus Cathedral,” located within the palace grounds. Or buy a second ticket. I know you’ve been spoiled already by how cheap everything is in the Czech Republic, but don’t let that make you cheap. The extra ticket is worth it.
There is a separate entrance to the tower off to the side. Pause before beginning the long climb and listen to the confused tourists who think they are at the main entrance to the cathedral arguing with the unlucky attendant. “Our ticket includes entrance to the cathedral!” Aren’t language barriers fun? Once you get to the top, take your time soaking in the view of the old city and the river.
The Old Town Hall Tower
Located in the Old Town Square not far from the Charles Bridge, this is the best way to get up-close views of Prague’s famous architecture and red roofs. Don’t cheat and take the elevator halfway up. Earn the view and take the stairs. And don’t forget the student discount.
Prague’s “Eiffel Tower”
That’s not its official name, of course, but you’ll know it when you see it. And you’ll see it immediately. Located on the same side of the river as the castle, it’s a little bit out of the way, but well worth it. And there’s a student discount. This tower might be my favorite of the three, because it has views of the old town and the castle. You can take in the best sights of Prague all at once. Plus, it’s one of the few towers I’ve climbed that gets the architecture right. No sweating all the way up a stuffy staircase only to shiver in the open air at the top. This tower’s stairs are open to the elements, but you get to enjoy the view with huge glass windows at the top. Just be prepared to crowd around the few windows that open if you want a picture.
