FINLAND
Overview
Finland’s name may leave some travelers a bit confused (not nearly as straightforward as "Iceland" or "Greenland"), but while fishing does prove to be a popular industry, fins and Finns won’t be the only things you find in this country. It holds the titles of most democratic and least corrupt country in the world, and also boasts "the world’s cleanest tap water." Damn, that’s refreshing. Dominated by outdoor attractions, Finland offers a beautiful breath of fresh air (and a dip in simmering hot-spring saunas—there are 1.8 million to choose from) for all adventure-seekers. From ice-water swimming to fly fishing and white-water rafting, Finland is the ideal pill for adrenaline junkies. And while you could spend your entire trip just looking on at the frost-covered mountainscapes and thousand-year-old towns, some of the best attractions are in transit. Try navigating ice-covered roads, or opt instead to mush at the heels of a dogsled. If you run into a herd of unleashed reindeer while skiing, feel free to take your complaints to the big, jolly man in the red suit, as Santa Claus takes up his official residence in frosty Finland. Soccer? Basketball? Feh. Those tired of traditional sports will find their niche here, as Finland hosts the world’s first championship sport designed especially for the athletic couple: wife-carrying. What could be better than hauling your dearest through muck, mud, and snow? Winning her weight in beer if you cross the finish line first, of course.
