Orientation
MONT SAINT-MICHEL
Situated on the border between Brittany and Normandy, Mont St-Michel is a small island connected to the mainland by a sturdy causeway. Grande rue is its only major street, which leads up to the entrance to the Abbey. Pontorson, 9km due south down D976, has the closest train station, as well as several affordable hotels; there’s also a supermarket (open daily 8am-8pm) and cheap cabins at the campground across the causeway, 1.8km from the Mont. There’s no public transportation off the Mont after 8pm, and the last bus to Rennes leaves at 5:25pm. Biking to or from Pontorson takes about 1hr. on terrain that is relatively flat but not always bike-friendly; the path next to the Couesnon River is the best route.
