VENCE

Overview

A mid-sized medieval village in the hills above Cagnes sur Mer, this
peaceful haven is most famous for the healing properties of its drinking water; laugh all
you want, but its powers were”proven” when it healed Nero’s wife, Poppaea, and preserved
the life of Henri Matisse, who designed and painted the nearby Chapelle du Rosaire. While
the sights here might not be much of a draw for young travelers, it’s certainly worth
visiting this town to deliberately do nothing and relaxin its small peaceful squares, or
sample one of the ubiquitous open air markets. Make a mental note to come back here when
you’re old and feeble, because something about the city is incredibly calming, even with
its lively underbelly and riotous, month-long music festival.
