DRESDEN

Dresden is located about 60km northwest of the Czech border and 200km south of Berlin. The Elbe River bisects the city horizontally, with the Neustadt to the north, and the Altstadt to the south. Hauptbahnhof, located just southwest of the Altstadt, is linked to the Altmarkt (the center of Dresden’s beautiful, historic buildings) by Prager Strasse, a pedestrian zone lined with fountains and out-of-place American franchises. The Altmarkt is connected to the Neustadt by the Augustusbrücke, the Elbe’s central pedestrian bridge, which links the Altstadt to the Neustadt’s tree-lined walkway, Hauptstrasse. Most of Dresden’s historic sights are located along the Elbe, with the majority on the northern rim of the Altstadt. Neustadt is the younger side of Dresden. It’s full of hostels, inexpensive restaurants, and a nightlife scene consisting of busy bars and those notorious German factory clubs, which lie way up north in the Industriegelände district along the main Neustadt artery Königsbrückerstrasse.
