HEPPENHEIM
From the train station, walk straight ahead along Bahnhofstr. and cross the street onto the pedestrian and commercial zone of Friedrichstr. and follow the signs through the half-timbered houses to the Altstadt and the Markt. The gorgeous Rathaus was built in 1551, and its glockenspiel chimes daily at 8, 11:45am, 3, 6, and 10pm. Across from it is Liebig-Apotheke, named after the chemist Justus von Liebig who spent part of his apprenticeship there. Liebig is credited with being the “father of fertilizer,” discovering that nitrogen is essential for making healthy fruits and vegetables for your chomping pleasure.
