ST. ANDREWS
Overview
The town of St. Andrews, besides being a mecca for every tourist to ever get turned on by Jack Nicklaus’ putting prowess or Tiger Wood’s “long drive,” is a beautiful seaside university town. Quite possibly one of the most cosmopolitan towns in Europe, St. Andrews swells in population during term time as thousands of students, many of them international, attend the University of St. Andrews, Scotland’s oldest university. It’s perhaps thanks to the students that a few good bars and affordable restaurants have kept the fancy plaid pants “golfers” establishments at bay. Still, golf reigns supreme here (the Scots did invent the thing) and, pro shops, putting greens, whirring golf carts, hotels, restaurants, and bars all cater to those out to improve their swing. Just keep them away from the fine china.
