Great Outdoors

BeachesKoufonisia is lined with beaches, all of which are quiet, small, and look out onto distant islands’ mountains. Ammos is closest to town and is directly to the right of the port when looking inland. Fortunately, even though the beach is right next to the port, it’s not polluted. The sand on Ammos is fine, and the water is so clear that you can see the sea urchins beneath you while you wade. Continuing 10min. down the road behind the sand, past clusters of dormatia, leads you to Porta and the long stretch of fine sand at Harakopou. Quieter and smaller Fanos waits on the other side of the ridge. A 3km walk or a bike ride up some serious hills along the main inland road takes you toTPori. There are gorgeous, cavernous cliffs of sheet rock by Pori that, though stunning and endowed with natural ridges, are highly dangerous to climb down. A fair distance from the eateries in town is Pori Cafe (~open daily 9am-9pm). The one downside to Koufonisia’s beaches is their windiness; the gusts can blow the sand pretty aggressively—either embrace the natural exfoliation or position your towel such that you are protected from the pelting sand.To reach the beaches, a boat can take you on a scenic coastal ride to Kato Koufonisia (~20min., 5 per day at 11am, 1pm, 5pm, 8:15pm, and 11pm from the port`Round-trip €5). Another boat (~5 per day at 10am, noon, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm) can take you to the mainland beaches. It stops at Finikas (~10min.), Italida (~15min.), and Pori. (~20min.)
