I am finally getting around to typing up a post about my travels to Greece, the cutest country ever.
We had a few mishaps with our flight being rescheduled, so our layover in Athens ended up being most of our Thursday. The second flight from Athens to Mykonos...well, let's just say I won't forget it soon. It was literally a 20 minute flight, but it was the worst flight of my life. I have finally figured out that small planes and short flights do not sit well with me. You could feel everything--every bit of turbulence, every move the captain made. And because it was so short, everything was very abrupt and forceful. For example, after the take-off that was (what felt like) a 90 degree angle, the captain put the plane into cruise mode. I literally thought the plane was stopping in midair and that we were about to fall to our death. I was terrified. But I made it, as did every one else on the plane. I think it was just an overreaction on my part.
Anyways--Mykonos. When we got there, it was dark, so we went for a little walk to get our bearings. We agreed that it was "such a cute city," but everything changes in the daylight. The next morning on our walk, the city was ten times cuter. Every building was white and square and the shutters were some shade of awesome. Some were painted a dark blue, some turquoise, some olive green, some pale green. I saw Barbie pink shutters, and I saw some lilac-colored shutters. It seemed as though we were walking through a man-made set that was constructed for a fairy-tale film.
The first day we just walked around, taking a tour for ourselves. We saw the windmills, Little Venice, and lots of churches. And the second day we rented ATVs and drove ourselves around the island. The coast of the island was absolute paradise (literally, that was the name of one of the beaches), while the main land of the island was countrified. Though the scenery was breathtaking, the island was pretty dead. There was no one around. The season of Mykonos occurs in the summer; that’s when it gets crazy and people from all over meet in Mykonos to party and get wild. I’m glad it wasn’t like that when we were there. I mean, yes, it would have been a lot of fun, but I am glad that I got to see the island for what it is rather than what people (and tourists) bring to it.
The food was great, too. I had a nutella crepe with bananas and strawberries one night. The nutella was oozing out of the crepe. Inside, outside -- nutella was everywhere. I also had me some real feta cheese on top of a greek salad (chopped up cucumber, tomato, kalamata olives, green pepper, onion, and thyme oil). I had greek yogurt on the plane. I had a glass of ouzo on the porto. To say the least, I was very satisfied with my food purchases for this trip.
Greece was one of the only places I wanted to travel to in Europe. I’ve wanted to go to Greece ever since I was a little girl. In fact, I wanted to study abroad in Greece. However, whatever the circumstances, whether or not they have been exactly like my plans, I made it. And I still can barely fathom that fact.
