SANTORINI
Overview
Though it’s hard to tell today, Santorini is the product of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in world history. It’s come a long way from the pile of lava it was back in the second millennium BCE, and is now a tourists’ mecca. With breathtaking sunsets in Oia (the site of the iconic blue domes you’ve seen on all the postcards) and pristine, posh cliffside towns teeming with jewelry shops and art galleries, Santorini is the perfect place for a honeymoon, making it the most popular island among lovers. Partiers also come to revel nights away on the steep crags of the caldera (volcanic cliff) in Fira. For beach bums, the island boasts gorgeous beaches in exotic colors like black, red, and white. You can also be more adventurous on hiking trails up to ancient mountaintop ruins and boat tours to active volcanoes. Due to this versatility, armies of tourists pour into Santorini from across the world. Be sure to make this island paradise a priority on your island-hopping route. However, be advised that Santorini’s prices are about as steep as its cliffs.
