TINOS TOWN
Overview
Tinos Town is far less touristy than might be imagined, though there
are a few ill-conceived Barbie-emblazoned bags on the way up to the Panagia Evangelistria
Church, the main church and attraction. The town is less sexualized than Mykonos but still
quite vibrant, and as a result it has an active, relatively PG nighttime scene. Push past
the town limits and into the countryside to see villages from another era and views of
mountains like Mount Exobourgo that will make you gasp. The green shrubbery, hazy with
purple flowers, is stunning, as is the sea from the high vantage point. Make sure to watch
your hat—Tinos is incredibly windy, and the ancient Greeks thought the island was home to
Aeolus, the god of wind. Also, plan your trips according to the local siesta times of
3-6pm. Businesses take a break, so don’t plan on doing any shopping during those
hours.
