Great Outdoors

THE GREAT OUTDOORSBeaches are the reason most people come to Amalfi. The town’s main beach is the Marina Grande, which, though unremarkable, is well-loved and easily accessible (translation: crowded). Head around the Torre di Amalfi to neighboring Atrani, where a much quieter sandy stretch awaits. If lying in the sun and dipping into the calm waters isn’t your idea of fun, try a rigorous~hike through Amalfi’s stunning countryside. One of the most popular hikes connects Amalfi to Ravello through Pontone. The 2hr. uphill climb starts at the Museo della Carta. From here, continue on the partially paved path, following signs for Ravello. Monuments you’ll pass on the way include the churches of San Giovanni Battista and Santa Maria del Carmine. The shorter 1hr. hike from Atrani to Ravello consists mostly of steep stairs and provides a scenic route ending up beside the Villa Cimbrone. The tourist offices in both Ravello and Amalfi provide detailed hiking maps.
