Orientation
ASSISI
The closest train station is in the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli at the base of the hill upon which Assisi sits. From the station, you’ll take APM Line C to ascend the mountain. There’s also a beautiful walking path that provides a much grander introduction to Assisi, but it’s a long unshaded drag only suitable for a time when you are without bags and have good weather. Take the bus to the end of the line at Piazza Matteotti, in the east of Assisi. The city is on the south face of the hill, so north is up in both maps and topography. The Basilica di San Francesco marks the western terminus of the city—the several long avenues that traverse the town all end up there. Piazza del Comune, in the centro, provides another orientation point with the tourist office and a concentration of hotels and restaurants.
