Riomaggiore, the touristy town at the other end of the Cinque Terre from Monterosso, lacks a beach but is intimately connected with the sea. The water’s not even visible from the village’s main drag—but don’t tell the fishermen rinsing their Xboat hulls or the nearby boat rental companies trawling for customers. Those visitors who set up camp in Riomaggiore and prefer not to tan on rocks and swim in the wake of passing boats take the train to the sandy beaches of Monterosso each morning. As the sun sets (and with it the opportunity for soaking up the rays) they return in droves to descend upon the town’s numerous seafood restaurants and affordable bars, adding to this town’s vibrant culture.
