SAN GIMIGNANO

The bus from Poggibonsi will let you off right outside the city’s main entrance. Through that gate you’ll enter onto Via San Giovanni, the main tourist drag. Follow that uphill to reach Piazza Duomo and the adjacent Piazza della Cisterna, which you can identify by the big well (cisterna) in the center. This is the path on which you’ll find most of San Gimignano’s activity, and therefore the most tourists. Past P. Duomo is Via San Matteo, which leads you through to Porta San Matteo on the other side of the city. There are signs pointing the way to most sights and many restaurants as well. If you intend to stray off this main artery, Rocca di Montestaffoli and Via dei Artisti to the left are good places to explore, as is the path around the city’s walls.
