NORWAY

Overview

The land of fjords and ski slopes at the northern tip of Europe was once home to the host of rabble-rousing, village-massacring Vikings that ravaged the continent a millennium ago. Now it’s better known for its waterfalls towering over 600ft. and the popular tradition known as helgefylla, or "weekend binge drinking." But while you can be sure to take part in such practices everywhere from Oslo—the capital with "the best quality of life" of all European cities—to Bodo, where glasses may be raised beneath the midnight sun (and friends may be left passed out beneath the midnight bench), there’s much more to be done while recovering from the weekend festivities. Travelers can stroll through the world’s most beautiful fish markets and through the streets of Kristiansand, where you can find Norway’s only palm trees. Strolling not your jam? No worries. In winter, skiers abound—downhill and cross-country alike—while in summer, skiers still abound as many Norwegians take to "roller-skis" to get that same white-snow-skating-feel on the not-so-fluffy black asphalt. Once you’ve returned from the sights, saunas, and arctic lights of nature, be sure to pick your friend back up from under the bench before the weekend helgefylla sweeps around again with a fresh round of drinks. It would be a real shame to let that Viking rabble-rousing tradition die out.
