ALICANTE

For those traveling from afar, trains arrive at the Estación Central, located on the western edge of the city on Avenida Salamanca. A short walk down this road will take you to Pl. Luceros, which intersects with Avenida Federico Soto, which runs straight to the beach (becoming Av. Doctor Gadea near the water) and close to the bus station on C. Portugal. Continuing straight through Pl. Luceros will have you walking along Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio, the main artery of the city. Walking 10-15min. will drop you off in front of the Mercat Central and TRAM Station(where trains from Costa Blanca arrive), while a right just past the market onto Rambla Méndez Núñez, known simply as La Rambla, provides a plethora of huge shops and restaurants as well as easy access to the cozier and more interesting options of the casco antiquo. If you decide to take the pedestrian C. Casaños between La Rambla and Av. Frederico Soto, a world of ritzy restaurants awaits, with cheap shops and food located on any of the side streets. If sand and sun is your destination, the red marble floors and shop-laden path of the Explanada d’Espanya run nearly 2km across the port, linking the Parque de las Canalejas to the beach and providing access to the looming Castillo Santa Barbara’s elevator.
