When studying abroad in Seville, Spain, there are three things you must know. 1) Vino is always a good idea, 2) you will never pass as a local, and 3) learn to enjoy getting lost. Let me elaborate.
"To drink vino (wine) or not to drink vino?"—that is the question—and the answer is always yes. Not only is the wine in Spain cheaper than water, but when in Spain, do as the Spaniards do.
This brings me to my second point: no matter how hard you try, as an American student studying in Spain, you will never pass as a local. To accept this early on will avoid much heartache down the line. No matter how many man-scarves you try to rock or cigarettes you chainsmoke, you just won't fit in. Americans are loud, travel in packs, and simply aren't suave enough to pass as Europeans.
Lastly, getting lost in Seville is encouraged. Well, you don't really have a choice, because you're bound to get lost eventually, but enjoy discovering the hidden side streets. You will find small treasures in the copious tapas bars and flamenco joints.
When 'studying abroad,' you must understand that actual studying should be at a minimum. Close your textbooks and go explore. Spain is waiting for you.
